Chipotle shares have trounced the S&P 500 during Brian Niccol’s time as CEO

Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. shares are down about 12% in Tuesday morning action upon the news that Chief Executive Brian Niccol is leaving the fast-casual chain to head up Starbucks Inc.

And judging by Chipotle’s CMG stock action in recent years, it’s clear why investors are reacting so strongly to Niccol’s exit, which is effective Aug. 31.

From the time Niccol took over the top spot at Chipotle in March 2018 through Monday’s close, shares of the company were up 773%. By contrast, the S&P 500 SPX gained 99% over that span.

Tuesday’s sharp move lower in Chipotle shares would translate to their worst single-day performance since Oct. 25, 2017 — when the stock lost 14.6% — if the declines carry through to the close, according to Dow Jones Market Data. Tuesday’s downward pressure reflects the respect investors have for Niccol’s transformation of the chain and the acknowledgement that his business acumen won’t be easy to replace.

TD Cowen analyst Andrew Charles noted that Niccol has a big background in marketing, which he used to execute a turnaround at Chipotle and revitalize the brand’s image.

Starbucks SBUX shares, meanwhile, are up 21% in Tuesday action and on track for their best day on record.
