Not really a “popular” problem in the sense that every car suffers from it, but engine mount leaks can and do happen — depending on the type of mount.
Many modern cars use hydraulic (fluid-filled) engine mounts instead of the old solid rubber style. These mounts contain a damping fluid (often glycol or a special oil) to better absorb vibrations. Over time, the rubber can crack, or the seals can wear out, and the fluid may leak.
- When it happens: usually after 80–150k km (50–90k miles), depending on driving conditions, heat, and engine vibrations.
- Symptoms: visible fluid around the mount, increased vibrations in the cabin, clunking or knocking on acceleration/braking, or a sagging engine position.
- Which cars: luxury brands (Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Lexus) and many newer mainstream cars with comfort-oriented mounts are more prone, since they often use hydraulic mounts. Cars with simple rubber mounts don’t have fluid to leak.
So: it’s not a universal “common failure” like brake pads wearing out, but on cars with fluid-filled mounts, leaks are a known and relatively common aging issue.[/i]
