Just days after receiving the 2026 Fields Medal in Philadelphia, Yu Deng sits down with SAIR's Maddy Tao for one of his first interviews as a medalist for this special episode of On the SAIR.

Yu Deng, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Chicago, was honored for cracking a problem that stood open for 125 years: Hilbert's sixth problem, the challenge of placing the laws of physics on rigorous mathematical foundations. In plain terms, he explains how his work builds a bridge between scales — from the chaotic motion of individual particles, to the Boltzmann equation, to the fluid equations that describe the world we actually see.
