老羊倌刚来美国时，医学院毕业的一个美国女孩儿跟我共用一个实验台桌 - 就是那种大约5米长的实验桌。
女孩儿叫 Colleen，她读的是 MD - PhD 双学位，需要做研究项目。Colleen 非常聪明，待人也特别好，一有空她就教我口语。
我们那个年代的中国学生，很多都分不清 s 与 th 发音的区别，比如 truce 与 truth，但以英语为母语的人一下子就听出差异了。还有 war 与 wall 的发音区别等等。这些 Colleen 都帮我掰正了。
有一天，实验室收音机里播放卡彭特的歌曲，当时我说："She has a mellifluous voice."
Colleen 很困惑，她追问道："What's that word again?"
我把刚才的话重复了一遍。
她哈哈大笑："You use no cheap words."
Colleen 解释，好多词主要是书面使用，平时大家讲话时不用；比如那个 mellifluous 就极少用，一般大家会说 pleasant 或者 sweet。
有个实验，我做了特殊安排，在跟 Colleen 交流时，我说: "I did ... intentionally."
Colleen 马上纠正："You did that on purpose."
在 Colleen 的帮助下，我的口语突飞猛进。
Colleen 后来成了小有名气的 anesthesiologist - 这个词我的发音特别标准。
