Iranian football team members withdraw asylum requests: Report
Three more members of Iran’s women’s national football squad who sought asylum in Australia have decided to return to Iran.
Fars news agency reported two players and a member of the team’s logistics staff reversed their decisions and will head home. The development comes after several members of the Iranian team sought asylum during the Women’s Asian Cup in Australia.
Controversy erupted after some players initially refused to sing the Iranian national anthem before a match. Australia later granted humanitarian visas to several members of the team who said they feared persecution if they returned to Iran.
