Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 index surged Thursday past the record it set in 1989 before its financial bubble burst, ushering in an era of faltering growth.
The index closed Thursday at 39,098.68, up 2.2%. Its previous record was 38,915.87, set on Dec. 29, 1989. So now it is back to where it was 34 years ago.

back to OP's observation(incl. USD/JPY), apparently Warren Buffet is doing something there in JP market ... very fishy! very crocodile his native style. While I remember ~ 2 years ago, he pulled out money from Chinese market, people(incl. me) was wondering he was concerned about a escalation war between Mainland & Taiwan, even I was wondering if he got some inside news. Thus shift his capital warship to JP.
Now his movement got payback with eye-rolling results, cf. recent news about WB's earning!
