New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell said her city fell victim to a "terrorist attack" at a news conference Wednesday after a driver plowed a car into a large crowd of New Year's revelers earlier that morning on Bourbon Street.

However, FBI Special Agent Aletha Duncan said the incident is "not a terrorist attack" in comments delivered after the mayor spoke.

At least 10 people were killed and 30 injured after the driver intentionally rammed into the crowd and then began firing a weapon at police officers from his vehicle as he crashed the car, police said.

The FBI said improvised explosive devices were found and that investigators are working to confirm whether the devices are viable.

Authorities urged people to avoid Bourbon Street while an investigation is ongoing.

It happened around 3:15 a.m. toward the end of New Year’s celebrations in New Orleans and hours before the kickoff of the AllState Bowl between Notre Dame and Georgia held in the city’s Caesars Superdome, with thousands expected to be in attendance.

Sources say the suspect in the attack has been killed possibly by a New Orleans Police officer.

Investigators and police are currently looking for more suspicious packages in the French Quarter believed to be explosive devices.

FBI says they are investigating an IED type device, that they believe the suspect brought into the French Quarter.

A Louisiana State Trooper flagged the suspicious device.

非常不幸啊,这样的事情非常难以预防。
FBI 改口称 an act of terrorism,不知道他们之前说不是 terrorism 的时候是什么理由。

"This morning, an individual drove a car into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, killing a number of people and injuring dozens of others," the FBI said in a statement Wednesday. "The subject then engaged with local law enforcement and is now deceased. The FBI is the lead investigative agency, and we are working with our partners to investigate this as an act of terrorism."

Investigators have identified Shamsud Din Jabbar, 42, as the suspect who intentionally rammed his vehicle into New Orleans revelers early on New Year's Day。

Jabber, a U.S. citizen born in Texas, had a black flag affixed to the hitch of the pickup truck he allegedly drove into the crowd. Officials are investigating whether that flag is related to the terrorist group ISIS, two senior law enforcement officials said.
