As a 2nd and 3rd-grade special education teacher at a Title I school, I know firsthand how crucial the Department of Education is for supporting students, especially those with learning disabilities like dyslexia. The curriculum I use is specifically designed to help dyslexic readers better understand phonics, and while it's effective, it requires specialized training. I've attended professional development sessions lasting anywhere from 4 to 7 hours just to be properly equipped to teach it. Without the necessary training, new teachers would struggle to implement these programs, further jeopardizing our already struggling school system.
