COVID-19 transmission levels are stable and low across the United States, with national test positivity sitting at 0.8%. Modeling data indicates that infection growth has plateaued, with cases declining or holding steady in 37 states and growing in only 1 state.

For hospitalized patients, COVID-19 death rates range between 3% and 6%, while flu hospitalization death rates sit closer to 3% to 4%.

COVID-19 generally has a higher overall mortality rate, hospitalization rate, and risk of long-term death than the seasonal flu. However, the exact ratio fluctuates year-to-year and by age group, with severe flu seasons occasionally resulting in higher week-to-week mortality rates among certain demographics.Key Mortality DifferencesOverall Death Risk: Large-scale studies show that hospitalization for COVID-19 carries a higher 30-day and 180-day mortality risk than hospitalization for influenza. The Elderly Population: For individuals aged 65 and older, COVID-19 is significantly more lethal, resulting in hospitalization rates up to 10 times higher and death rates up to 4 times higher than seasonal influenza.

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/f ... le/2818660
